Engineering Development and LAA Oversight

With the external form based closely on Mk IX Spitfire geometry, the next stage was to assess computationally how the substantial reduction in aircraft weight would affect its flying and structural characteristics.

Once the initial assessment produced satisfactory results, attention turned to one of the central engineering challenges: establishing an acceptable centre-of-gravity range with a substantially lighter engine and a tandem cockpit.

A top-level model of aircraft weight and load distribution was developed, followed by progressively more detailed structural analysis.

This work examined wing loading, bending moments, shear loads and fuselage torsion, together with the loads transferred through the empennage, control surfaces and primary structural members.

The resulting figures were assessed against established aerospace engineering practice and recognised design criteria to determine whether the proposed configuration fell within acceptable structural limits.

Working with the Light Aircraft Association

The next major step was engagement with the engineering department of the Light Aircraft Association (LAA) to establish a pathway for the aircraft’s development and eventual construction under its oversight.

A formal presentation was made to senior LAA engineering staff. Following detailed consideration of the project and the engineering work completed to that stage, the project was allocated an official LAA Number.

An important requirement was that the prototype should use a certified aero engine. Although considerably more expensive than many alternative powerplants, this approach removes a significant area of development risk from an already ambitious prototype programme.

It also raises the project to a genuinely modern standard of propulsion, reliability and systems engineering.

The association additionally recommended the appointment of an independent aeronautical engineer, a Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society, to oversee the continuing engineering development of the aircraft.

These steps established a structured engineering and regulatory pathway from concept aircraft to an airworthy prototype.
